i’m willing to bet that a lot of people get hungry while traveling. a combination of unfamiliar areas (the airport), stress, boredom, and time zone crossings can wreak havoc on anyone’s diet. a lot of travel bloggers write about what’s best for you to take with you, and while i’m probably going to be no different, i’m also going to say that when i travel, i get super hungry and cranky (hangry) if i go too long without sugar. i also get a tad bit motion sick, so having something to settle my stomach is key to a happy flight.
therefore, my pick of snacks to take with you on the plane or in the car is a mix of healthy, heart-friendly, happy family snacks, and oh-god-i-can’t-believe-i’m-eating-this unhealthy snacks. read on for more on what i pack in my traveling lunchbox!
almonds. everybody’s favourite healthy snack. almonds have protein, they’re tasty, and they are tsa-friendly. win win for everyone. i stick with the basic bag of raw almonds, but you can find all sorts: chocolate covered, yogurt covered, or even spicy almonds.
special k bars. or any other granola bar. they pack well and even if they smush, lost in the depths of your carry-on, they’ll still taste great. a word of warning: those nature valley ones will only reduce to a pile of oats in your bag (unless you read about how to eat them without crumbs).
banana chips. these are the only way i will eat bananas. i know that sounds really weird, but it’s probably the sugar in them. trader joe’s has a nice big bag of banana chips for cheap, but make sure you take along a plastic bag to corral the stray ones.
trailblazer bites. if you feel like making some no-bake snacks to take along with you, these are perfect (see above). i’ve seen various recipes, but this one from trader joe’s is pretty simple. they’re freezable too, so you can never have too many…
chocolate pretzels. admittedly you can buy these, but again if you’re feeling crafty, you can drizzle some salty pretzels with a melty chocolate.
pita crisps. you can even purchase hummus at a kiosk past security if you want to dip them. if you are game for making your own, just buy a bag of pita bread, slice up, divide the pitas, drizzle with some olive oil, salt and spices, and stick in the oven for fifteen min or so.
fruit snacks. nothing takes me back to my childhood like fruit snack bags and jello pudding packs. i haven’t tried it, but i suspect tsa wouldn’t be too happy with your four-pack of pudding snacks. rest assured, we know that fruit snacks are a-okay. they’re delish, they’re semi-healthy, and they have enough sugar to ward off a crash.
