a new collaboration series with some fellow bloggers. it’s called “what’s in your suitcase?” and we’re talking travel tips and packing ideas.
today’s featured blogger is natalie, from cosmos mariners. natalie currently lives in south carolina with her husband and daughter.
how did you get started traveling?
There isn’t a time that I don’t remember traveling, thanks to my road-trip-lovin’ parents! My first trip was to Walt Disney World when I was 2, but I have zero recollection of it. The first travel memory that I have is of a trip we took to California when I was 5. I remember these snapshots of certain things: the pastel crayons I got to color with on the plane, the pancakes I ate at Yosemite National Park, and the dress we bought in Carmel.
when you travel, how do you pack? what do you like best about it? have you ever used another style of luggage?
I’m kind of a luggage junkie, so I’ve got a little bit of everything in my closet. I really hate checking bags, so whenever possible, I cram everything I own into this battered grey suitcase I’ve had for a decade. It’s not pretty, but it is trusty! For road trips, I have a tried-and-true Vera Bradley Weekender duffle bag: it’s just the right size to throw some jeans, shirts, and a bathing suit into.
what one item can you not leave the house without?
An extra pair of contacts. I can’t see ANYTHING without my contacts or glasses, so another pair of contacts is non-negotiable. They’ve actually come in handy more times that you think, as I tend to lose or tear them at the worst possible time. After all, what’s the point of traveling if you can’t see what’s in front of you?
what are your carry-on must haves?
A good book, my own headphones, a travel blanket, and hand sanitizer. When I’m traveling with my toddler, I have to pack snacks–lots and lots of snacks–because if all else fails in my toddler soothing techniques, the snacks always come in handy.
do you swear by any particular toiletry products for in-transit travel?
I have to have contact solution since my eyes get so dry on the flight. My glasses are another necessity!
what is your go-to packing tip, when people ask?
Pack everything in one neutral hue. I tend to gravitate towards black or grey; I use one as a base (black sweater, black skirt, black tights, black dress, etc.) and then layer colorful scarves and necklaces since those take up so much less room.
what is the oddest things you’ve seen someone traveling with?
On a recent flight, I saw a guy traveling solo carrying three neck pillows onto the plane. I’m all for in-flight comfort, but what was he doing with THREE?!
