Not every trip can — or has to — be an epic round-the-world jaunt. Sometimes you just need a quick getaway to get out of the house and recharge the batteries. Staycations are all the rage these days, after all. Maybe it’s an action-packed weekend in the city, or maybe it’s curling up in front of a fire and staring out the window in the height of hygge. These idyllic New England getaways have what you’re looking for. Thanks to our affiliation with Virtuoso, you’ll get complimentary perks to make your stay even cosier.

From city to countryside to coast, there’s plenty of incredible, cosy hotels in New England. Our favourites run the gamut from clifftop paradise to mountain-side comfort to inner-city luxe. Just a short drive from our Waterbury headquarters, Winvian Farm and Mayflower Inn & Spa provide quiet New England charm. Set on 113 acres, Winvian Farm offers cottages set against a backdrop of woods and lakes to lull you into relaxation. You might not want to leave the room, but the lure of five-diamond dining is too powerful to resist. Mayflower Inn’s grounds take up 58 acres of woodland and gardens. The idyllic Litchfield Fields and soothing spa treatments will melt your cares away.
Travel advisor tip: Take a peek at Winvian’s website before you reach out to book. All the cottages are unique, and there is sure to be one you prefer over all others.
Vermont
Not to be outdone, Twin Farms occupies more than 300 acres of forest, meadows and ponds. Feel free to explore on your own or take a guided tour. In any season, there’s no end to the activities. Winter is particularly good for skiing — cross-country or downhill — and sledding. Pitcher Inn, the sister property to Winvian Farm, is a boutique property just minutes from some of the best ski slopes in the Northeast. Each room is beautifully and dutifully appointed to fit its unique theme.
Travel advisor tip: Just like at Winvian, you’re best to pick your room well in arrival at Pitcher Inn. My personal favourite? Ski, with Mountain a close second. Perhaps a colonial room is more your vibe though, or maybe you’d enjoy sleeping in a fly-fishing themed room.
The Coast
Rhode Island’s Ocean House in Watch Hill is famed for its beach, and rightfully so, as the wide stretch of sand is a fixture of many happy memories. When winter’s chill sets in, it’s a great place to sit by the fire and watch the waves roll in. Cape Elizabeth, Maine’s Cliff House has a more rugged setting, as the Atlantic crashes against the rocks surrounding the resort. The great outdoors are at your fingertips, whether you’re kayaking, snowshoeing or lobstering. Winter in the Hamptons? Why not? With a private beach, Gurney’s Montauk Resort, at the edge of the island, is the only year-round resort in the Hamptons. It makes an easy getaway from NYC.
The Berkshires
Canyon Ranch is practically synonymous with wellness, and its Lenox resort lives up to the reputation. Energising activities combine with healthful cuisine and spa treatments to transform your body and mind. Programs can be as intense or laid-back as you like. Just a couple miles down the road, Blantyre covers 110 acres of lush Berkshires greenery with a lavish Tudor-style mansion anchoring the estate. The mansion shines in all seasons, decorated for festivities to mark the big occasions throughout the year.
The City
The Boston Harbor Hotel’s 60-foot stone archway welcomes guests to the mix of history and modernity that symbolises New England’s largest city. Use it as a jumping off point for the Freedom Trail, a night at the Pops, or taking in sporting event. Equinox Hotel, New York’s newest five star hotel, recently opened at Hudson Yards, New York’s newest unique landmark. Take in all the sights and sounds the city has on display before retreating to your home away from home on the New West Side.
Travel advisor tip: city hotels often have many room categories. Do due diligence when selecting your room to ensure you have an epic city view.
